Observation Narrative
This plot is located on a low alluvial bottom that extends for about 20 m from the shore of the Potomac River to a slightly higher floodplain terrace at the base of a bluff. The vegetation is a closed-canopy forest with a very sparse understory and a patchy herb layer of fast-growing, flood-tolerant forbs. The overstory consists entirely of large-diameter Acer saccharinum. Polygonum virginianum is the most characteristic herbaceous plant.
